Pizza Express Review – Weston-Super-Mare

My review of Pizza Express – Weston-Super-Mare

Pizza lovers the wait is over, the new Pizza Express in Weston-Super-Mare is now open!

Saturday night I was delighted to be invited along to the new Pizza Express in Weston-Super-Mare. I invited my 16-year-old Daughter who was thrilled to join me, as she dines out quite frequently. The Restaurant is based in Dolphin square, which will be, the new up and coming area within Weston-Super-Mare. Pizza Express only opened it’s doors on the 29th November 2017.

Due to the car park still having building works, I was able to park really easy in the NCP across the road. Arriving for 7pm, I paid just over £1.00 to park and this was valid until the early morning, not bad at all.

Walking up to the Restaurant on the newly laid pavement,  I could see the Pizza Express logo on the plant troughs outside which looked very modern. The tasteful twinkling Christmas lights beckoned us to go inside.

As I walked through the door I was greeted by Staff with a very warm welcome. The tables were well laid out and it looked so fresh and new. We were seated in one the beach hut booths. Each beach hut booth, I noticed represented a beach in or nearby Weston-Super-Mare. Complimenting the design, I was informed that every “beach hut” comes complete with its own speaker which can be adjusted to suit your needs for the evening. Quite handy if you’re looking to have a meaningful conversation. The lights can also be dimmed if you require this. Ohhhh how romantic!

I was deciding on what to order.

Our waitress came over and greeted us very promptly. Our waitress for the evening was Lucy. Lucy was very polite and friendly. Customer service is a biggy for me, how I am treated by Staff, decides on whether I return to a Restaurant or not. We ordered our drinks, whilst we perused the Autumn/Winter menu. All the starters sounded delicious. I opted for the Roasted Tomato Soup, a wonderful winter starter.

My Daughter thought she would start, with one of her personal favourites and ordered the Garlic Bread with Mozzarella.

If you have seen my Instagram you will know that I’m an avid soup fan, I’m either having this in a restaurant or making my own.  The soup was delicious. It tasted homemade and had the right consistency. My Daughter gave me a little bit of her Garlic bread, as I couldn’t resist using some to finish off the remains in the bowl.

For mains, we both choose the festive specials on the menu. Feeling daring, I thought, I would try something completely different. I choose the gluten-free, beef and horseradish pizza and my Daughter choose the Maple-glazed Gammon pizza.

The Beef and Horseradish was different for me but enjoyable at the same time. With slices of garlic roasted potato slices, fresh rosemary, red onion, tomato and mozzarella, finished with fresh parsley and Gran Milano cheese. Each of the ingredients worked well together.

I tried both pizzas. The Maple-glazed gammon pizza is heavenly. It is quite sweet due to the maple-glaze and absolutely gorgeous. This contains – Maple-glazed gammon, spiced apricot chutney, goat’s cheese, garlic oil, tomato and mozzarella, finished with fresh parsley and Gran Milano cheese. This was my favourite.

My fingers get a little messy when eating pizza, as that’s how I choose to eat my pizza. My knife and fork just laid there completely untouched.

Whilst eating, we were able to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy our food. Each meal was brought over very promptly. Lucy came to see if everything was okay with our meals.  She explained how her role had just started in the restaurant, after receiving two months of training in Bristol. Staff undergo a full training programme with regular ongoing training which covers all aspects of the food industry. This took me by surprise, as I never knew that the waitresses had to take on so much training. It gave me peace of mind that Pizza Express took their food hygiene and employment procedures seriously.

Whilst we sat and ate, I took note of all the interior decor, which was very nautical and all about the Seafront in Weston-Super-Mare. Although eating in a chained restaurant, it had a very personalised feel. I was able to sit and chat with ease, whilst looking over at Chefs busy preparing the food in the open kitchen within the Restaurant. I personally like seeing the food being cooked in front of me.

Background music played at just the right volume. A party of approximately 8 was on a nearby table but at no point did this interrupt my evening. The sound level seemed just right throughout the entire evening.

Glancing around, I also spotted plenty of baby seats, which were situated by the toilets, ready for families.  With a three-course menu for kids at just £6.95, I can see this being very popular amongst families.

To end the evening we debated on a dessert, as we were literally so full and only just about had space in our bellies. I was wondering at one point if I would have to be rolled back to the car. Throughout the meal, we had been looking at a picture of Pizza Express’s famous “snowball doughballs with a salted caramel dip” The Snowball doughballs are covered in icing sugar and have a sprinkle of cinnamon. Temptation got the better of us, as we had never tried these. With the holiday festive season upon us I thought this would be perfect. We choose one plate for us to share. It made us both chuckle, as we looked at each other eating with icing sugar on our lips. The salted caramel is YUM! If you have a sweet tooth, you would love these.

We had a really enjoyable night, food was great and we laughed a lot.
